There
has been quite a buzz surrounding Etienne de Rocher
around the Bay Area for some time now. Back in 1995,
Etienne self-recorded a mysterious 7" single for
a song called 'Lazy Bones' and "released" it
to friends, family and a few local record stores. The
hand-printed cover art caught the eye of a Capitol Record's
scout who purchased the record. "Phone calls were
made, flights were booked, and soon enough I found myself
across the table from the suits, demanding creative
freedoms only given to the likes of Bob Dylan and Neil
Young,"
recalls Etienne. "Needless to say, the deal fell
apart and I was labeled “the wunderkind
who walked away” in a local press flurry." Since
then, Etienne has been content playing locally around the
Bay Area, and through word of mouth, slowly building his
own following, all the while maturing and adding newly
crafted songs to his catalogue. Etienne enlisted Todd Sickafoose
(Ani DiFranco) on bass, Todd Roper (Cake) on drums, and
producer Dan Prothero (Fog
City Records) to record his official debut:
"a poised,
confident CD, the work of someone who has already mastered
his craft, not someone just starting out. Every tiny sound
on the exquisite 12-song album is perfectly embedded in
the carefully crafted music. It's a sound that is spare
and open, yet dense and intricate at the same time."
