The
Fast Atmosphere story really begins in the mid-90s with
Charlie Hunter. We would regularly check out the Charlie
Hunter Trio's weekly gig at the Elbo Room in San Francisco.
In 1998 Charlie decided to relocate to Brooklyn. With
no web site in place at the time to keep us up to date
on his career we were quickly losing touch with one our
favorite musicians. Out of this frustration came a very
good thing - the idea to take things into our own hands.
Armed with years of firsthand information and piles of
recordings the realization was simple - "Who
could possibly build a more informative web site for
Charlie than us?" Hence www.shango.org (now
unrelated) was born. One thing lead to another,
and with encouragement from Charlie's management, we
acquired and moved the site to Charlie's domain
namesake, and our fledgling fan site became Charlie's
official web site.
Charlie plays his
own custom-made 8-string guitar (three bass strings and
five guitar strings) allowing him to play bass and guitar
simultaneously. He has generated a new interest in jazz
to younger audiences playing his own unique brand of
groove jazz inspired by his heroes like Rahsaan Roland
Kirk, Big John Patton, Eddie Harris and Jimmy Smith to
name a few. Hunter is always pushing himself to the next
level and exploring new territory with his instrument
and music, ensuring that the next time you see Charlie,
he will be onto something new and fresh. On top of all
this, he is a helluva nice guy.

After four years
of making music together and taking it around the world
for all of you to enjoy, Derrek Phillips and John Ellis
have departed from the Charlie Hunter Trio to pursue their
own musical adventures. Their farewell performance was
May 6th at the Clark County Amphitheatre in Las Vegas,
NV. It was a wonderful four years and
we wish them the best of luck in their future projects!
